Summer 2021
Like the previous summer, we weren’t sure until the last minute if we could host our usual summer camps and activities. It does seem that uncertainty has been dominating our lives, our decisions and our plans for the future. However, we know we must not stop pushing forward because of this.
So we were pleasantly surprised by the constant flow of volunteers, friends and relatives who from May to September filled our Volunteer Center, called “Home”. This name proved more appropriate during this time, than ever.
The need, and at the same time the beauty of living a few days away from the daily routine, from the media pressure and from all the fears and worries around us, has created new possibilities for growth.
One of the fundamental cornerstones of the “Home” is to offer a safe space where people of different religious, political and social tendencies can confront each other, with respect, curiosity and even appreciation for the “other”. We then are able to join in around common values, which translate into practical activities of helping others during which we all cooperate, without the risk of any label. More than ever this feature of the “Home” has been appreciated by all.
Thus, in addition to hosting 4 summer camps, the “Home” has become a welcoming place for many, allowing everyone to experience priceless emotions, starting with a renewed sense of gratitude for the simple fact of being able to be physically together, looking at each other in the eyes, exchanging a hug. All things that perhaps until summer 2019 we had taken for granted.
Our camps were attended by adults, teenagers and families with children. People who passed by our place came from various countries: Italy, Austria, Romania, Czechia, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Israel, Belgium, Poland.
We painted murals in Dom Turnić, Kindergarten Turnić, and another large one on the play ground in Veprinac. We did a clown therapy in Centar Fortica Kraljevica, and we took four trips to the earthquake area of Glina and Petrinja to visit and bring aid to needy families.
Thanks to each of you who helped make summer 2021 a hymn to life and hope while making the world of all of us a little better.
