Help for the Flood Victims in Slavonia and Bosnia
Thanks to the help of many, we were able to make a trip at the end of last month to view the situation and see how we could help the situation. As the area was quarantined due to disease, we were unable to go before.
In Vukovar, after 15 years, we met once again Mladen and Nina, who were previously refugees in the “Gaza” Camp in Karlovac, We brought some aid, including bottled water, but together with them, we did a large shopping for those of the area, thanks to the donations we had received.
Next, we visited hotel Borovo, where there are 134 flood evacuees from Gunja and Rajevo Selo. We made a package for every family and directly delivered to each one, as you can see from the pictures below.
The day after, we went to Gunja, one of the worst hit places in the area. Out of the 4,500 evacuees, none have returned to live in their homes. Only the men and oldest sons return daily to clean out the silt and try to repair the damage. Late afternoon when they leave, it appears to be a ghost town!
Next, we drove to Osječak, in northern Bosnia. There we met with Ilija and Svjetlana, who after fleeing from their home due to the war in 1992, once again had to flee a second time on the night of March 17th.
Once again we’d like to thank all those who have made this trip possible. We travelled 1,180 km and distributed: 540 lt. water, 120 lt. milk, 100 kg. sugar, 80 kg. flour, 75 lt. cooking oil, 40 lt. shampoo, 38 bottles of liquid soap, 25 boxes of sanitary napkins, 12 kg. coffee, 520 rolls of toilet paper and 4 large boxes of new shoes.
We plan on taking another trip with some of our camp attendees towards the end of this month. What we were able to distribute is a drop in the bucket, but we hope that for the future we can do more, and try to bring more comfort and moral support for those affected by the flooding.
